Museum Collection:

The Museum’s lower level is the repository of the archive and object collections, including artifacts, maps, photos, manuscripts, clippings, oral histories and memorabilia. General research questions that may be answered by research into our holdings can be submitted to our volunteers. For on-site research, the collection database is available to public researchers by appointment. Both inquiries and appointments are handled at (650) 948-9427, Ext. 11 or email lrobinson@losaltoshistory.org.

Donation to the Collection:

If you have an item which you feel might enhance our collection (and that pertains to the history or people of Los Altos and the surrounding area), please contact a collection volunteer at (650) 948-9427, Ext. 11 or send email to lrobinson@losaltoshistory.org. Docents and store volunteers are not able to accept any items. Thank you for considering an item donation to the museum.

Record your Memories:

If you or someone you know would like to recommend a Los Altos or Los Altos Hills resident for an oral history recording session of his or her memories, please send an email to Wendell Lehr at gmadorey@sbcglobal.net.

The History Museum complex is admission FREE.

Visitors are welcome to enjoy the gardens even when the house
and museum are closed. Picnic tables are available for lunch under the heritage oaks.

Self-Guided and Docent Tours Available
Explore the main museum on your own or opt for a docent guided tour at no additional charge. The J. Gilbert Smith House requires a docent guide. A free audio tour is available at the Museum Store for the upper level permanent exhibit. Special tours may be scheduled for groups of ten or more. A month’s lead time is required. We are closed New Year’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.
